“I teach 6th grade, and I have to admit I was skeptical as to how my students would react. I think the enjoyed it quite a lot. They were sitting forward in their seats, and laughing at the appropriate parts. It was fun to see some of them so involved.”

“Our students (Special Education Pre-schoolers and general education students for K-6) were totally engaged. Their interests and engagement was impressive. They had more questions to ask than we had time to indulge. The pacing of the opera was perfectly suited to the wide range of abilities and levels of maturity. I cannot say how pleasantly surprised we were that our entire student body sat totally tuned in. They laughed, little ones sat with mouths gapped open and others were so involved they unknowingly engaged in dialogue with the characters as they performed. It was a delight to see and experience. Most of our students had not heard the story of the Billy Goats and maybe one knew what an opera was…now they have experienced one and were engrossed to the fullest extent. They also enjoyed watching the piano player. I know seeds were planted today and I cannot thank you and The Shortino Foundation for your generosity to afford our students this exposure and experience. Students told me all day long how much they enjoyed the Opera as did teachers! We sincerely thank you and all those who were involved to make this opportunity possible for our much deserving students. Without you, it would not have happened for them and they sat so attentively.”

“This was fantastic! I love operas myself, since I lived in Italy more than 13 yrs. and this is the BEST way to introduce what the Opera is to children.”

“They were a captured audience. Thank you! The theme of bullying is so appropriate these days and the kids could relate to the characters.”

“This seemed to be the first experience students have had with opera. Students were engaged and had questions about the type of singing involved in the performance. We are very thankful for the San Jose Opera coming and presenting to Olinder Elementary School students. Special thanks to the donations by the San Jose Womens’ Club and the Shortino Foundation.”

“The preparation that the teachers did with the materials provided really allowed for very focused and respectful engagement during the entire performance. Even though the cafeteria was full of excited children, they certainly were engaged and in awe of the performance and the talent being presented. This is the 2nd year that we have been able to be funded through sponsorships. The students would NOT have such a cultural experience without such sponsorships. Students were even asking, “what are they going to present next year?”. That is great testimony of how they are enjoying such experiences and learning about the arts in a “real life” setting. Thank you so much for always being so professional and also for the sponsorships. What great opportunities our kiddos are getting. :o)”
