PASS: Justin Kauflin: An Introduction to Jazz

Justin Kauflin is a jazz musician, who, after losing his sight at the age of 11, gravitated towards playing jazz piano, despite having a background with classical violin. He received top honors at jazz festivals across the U.S. and began performing professionally by age 15, most notably with the Jae Sinnett Trio. He has since performed with many notable musicians, and most currently with his trio, traveling much of the world in doing so. In this performance for students, Justin will be performing songs from previous releases, as well as from his new album Coming Home. This set will consist of intermittent dialogue woven between songs, where Justin will speak to the various musical components of Jazz, the history of Jazz, his experiences with mentors that relate to Jazz history, and the creative process for musicians. Justin will also speak about his personal journey with the art form as well as discuss aspects about learning and playing with physical challenges. PASS: Stand Up Stories: Multicultural Tales to Live By

Performance

This show features a collection of multicultural folktales and myths which provide the listener with valuable messages and cultural wisdom they can use to live by. The stories include: PHAETHON (Greek Mythology) – A boy name Phaethon goes to find out if his father is Helios, God of the Sun. Helios offers Phaethon anything he wants to prove it to him. Phaethon rashly chooses to ride the chariot that carries the sun through the sky. Helios tries to change Phaethon’s mind, but Phaethon is stubborn. When Phaethon tries to ride the chariot, the horses go where they want and almost burn up the Earth when the sun gets too close. Zeus saves the earth by striking him down with his thunderbolt and scaring the horses back to the sky. Being young like Phaeton, is a time to play, a time to be patient, a time to listen and a time to learn. THE STONECUTTER (Chinese Folktale) – A stonecutter is envious of rich people. An angel turns him into a rich man. But he keeps finding things he’d rather be. He’d rather be king, a farmer, the sun, a cloud, the wind, a mountain. While he’s a mountain a stonecutter comes by and starts to chip away at him. The pain is too much for him to bear. He realizes that being a stonecutter was best after all. Be happy with who you are, you don’t need to look around and be envious of others. THE BOY WHO FED EAGLES (Tlingit and Haida tribes of the Pacific North West) – A boy gains powers for showing respect to his clan crest, the eagle, in spite of the disapproval of some tribe members. The Eagle becomes a spirit helper who guides, inspires and helps him develop strength, skills and judgment. For the Tlingit and Haida, regard for clan values is usually rewarded while neglect of them results in punishment. THE LIONS WHISKERS (Amhara Tribe of Ethiopia, Eastern Africa) – Finaye, a woman past childbearing age, longs for a family of her own. When she marries Tesfa and meets his motherless son Abebe, she is overjoyed. Fanaye tries hard to please the boy, but he wants no part of her. Desperate, Fanaye seeks the wisdom of a shaman—a tribal medicine man. He sends her on a mission to gather three whiskers from a fierce lion for a magic potion that will win her Abebe’s love. She collects the whiskers very carefully, by slowly gaining the lion’s trust. Once obtained, the whiskers are no longer needed, as Fanaye has also learned how she must likewise gain Abebe’s trust and love, with patience, respect and discretion. PASS: The Chhandam Youth Dance Company: North Indian Classical Dance

The Chhandam Youth Dance Company (CYDC) is an elite kathak troupe (North Indian classical dance), under the tutelage of renowned kathak artist Rachna Nivas. Dancers exemplify the technical, graceful, and dramatic aspects of the kathak tradition, performing in a style that evokes the richness of ancient India and engages contemporary audiences. CYDC takes great pride in its core values of excellence, leadership, and creative discovery, shepherding teens to not just excel in dance but to become advocates and rising young leaders in the arts. PASS: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Leap into the exquisite land of Narnia! In a mysterious old house, children find a musty, magical wardrobe containing a secret entrance that leads them into a fantastic world. More than just a delicious story of make-believe, C.S. Lewis’ Narnia is a land where a malicious Witch and a beautiful and dear Lion touch the hearts and influence the choices of all who enter. PASS: The Red Altar Project: Stories of Immigration, Migrations, and Journeys

Performance

The Red Altar Project is about six teenagers who crossed the ocean from China, crashed in the Carmel Bay of California, and began the fishing industry in the Monterey Bay area in 1850. In the face of anti-Chinese legislation, media propaganda with racist caricatures, and outright violence, they persevered with courage and ingenuity in an effort to lay down roots in their volatile new home. Seven generations later, their story is finally being told. People At Work

Field Trip

Taking on the roles of various workers, students will visit three workplaces to learn about different occupations in the Santa Clara Valley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Learn how these businesses supported agricultural communities, and how they contributed to the growth of the region. Buildings may include the Doctorâ€™s Office, Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn, Bank of Italy, Print Shop, Dashaway Stables or Chinese American Historical Museum.

Students and educators are invited to experience the inspiring energy of live dance, drama, and more in our intimate 300-seat Carriage House Theatre. Featuring performances by world class artists, these shows are a perfect launching point for either your classroom or home school curriculum. Our series has been curated by the Education Department to include performances that examine timely social themes through an integrated learning lens, offering multicultural and multidisciplinary perspectives. Plus, the 2018-2019 season features an especially exciting lineup of performances that examine timely social themes giving platform to diverse cultural perspectives. Scholarships are available. Poetry Writing & More

Residency (including camps); Workshops & Classes

Visiting poets work closely with classroom staff to design and implement a series of hands-on creative poetry writing workshops. The workshops reach students at all skill levels, including those who need ELD/bilingual support. Each session includes introduction, creative brainstorming, warm-up poems, and silent writing time. Students are mentored to bring their own life experiences into the creative writing process. Writing tools such as alliteration, simile, metaphor, hyperbole, juxtaposition, line, stanza, meter and rhyme are taught in the context of inspiring intellectual curiosity, imagination and the creative process. Visiting poets like to connect poetry with core curriculum like social studies, science, watershed studies, local history and visual art. Let your visiting poet know what matters so they will design a program that fits your needs. CPitS is experienced with multicultural and multilingual students, and always includes model poems from a variety of literary traditions, geared to YOUR students’ skills.

The Santa Clara County Office of Education hosts professional development in the following ways: a. The Marion Cilker Conference for Arts Education held annually in the Fall (November 15/16, 2013) for preservice and inservice teachers. The day-long conferences are planned and implemented through an amazing partnership with San Jose State University’s Lurie College of Education. Check our website for registration information under “educators.” b. The Arts In Your Classroom Conference is held annually in the Spring (tentatively March 31, 2014) for preservice teachers, inservice teachers, teaching artists, parents, and the community. This event is held with San Jose State and the Montalvo Arts Center. Check our website for more information under “educators.” c. Professional development on our Artrageous program (visual arts aligned to Common Core Standards) is held for any interested school district, parent group in a district, and after school provider. The program lessons can be viewed on our website under “Artrageous”Â and include lesson plans and “how to”Â videos. d. Specialized professional development can be created for schools, districts, arts organizations, after school providers, and more. If you have a need, we can generally meet it. This includes training in the visual arts, theatre, dance, music, arts integration, the Common Core State Standards, literacy and the arts, the arts and their benefits for English Learners, the arts and technology, and more. Let us know and we can customize a training for a low/no cost. e. We host the annual Young Artist Showcase for preK-12th grade public school students in Santa Clara County. Entries of visual art pieces are accepted from February – April each school year and is a competitive process with community judging from experts in both education and the arts. The artwork selected becomes part of the Young Artist Showcase’s permanent collection housed at the Santa Clara County Office, the nation’s largest adjudicated public school art collection. Progressions

Progressions is all about changing lives by helping low-income, at-risk youth in our community identify, cultivate and celebrate their gifts through music education and performance. Progressions is an evidence-based, K-12, youth development program that uses music to connect with low-income, at-risk students, challenges them with a rigorous music education program, helps them build a pro-social community, and stays with them until they graduate from high school. The programâ€™s mission is to help keep participants in school, out of gangs, and on the road to becoming better students and contributing citizens. Developed in 2009 and tested in spring 2011 as a pilot program in the Franklin-McKinley School District, Progressions has worked with over 450 children to date. Currently, the program works with 135 2nd-6th grade students at Santee Elementary School, Jeanne R. Meadows Elementary School and Success Academy, where music education is complemented with supporting resources and opportunities that foster a community of families that actively supports their childrenâ€™s growth and development.

Project Look

For more than 30 years, Project Look has provided fun, educational and memorable art experiences to thousands of students in Palo Alto and the surrounding area. Through interactive exhibition tours, followed by related hands-on activities, the program offers students and teachers a well-rounded field trip taught by volunteer docents and professional artist educators at a nominal fee. In 2013, Project Look was awarded the State Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in Museum Education!

Residencies

Residency (including camps)

A professional artist leads a series of classroom sessions that engage students in the creative process. Residencies of at least 8-12 weeks can provide unique learning opportunities for students. Classroom sessions are 30 minutes (K-1) to 1 hour in length. Teacher participation is integral to the residencyâ€™s success. The residency might culminate in a presentation of student work, which might take form as an exhibition, an anthology, or even an informal performance demonstration for parents or other students in the school. There are two essential components to a residency: Planning Meeting between artist and teachers. This is the time when teacher and artist establish mutual residency goals, discuss expectations of classroom management, set schedule, etc. This meeting can be facilitated by YANC program staff. Arts Instruction that aligns with classroom curriculum. Other components may be included in a residency, depending on the objectives of the project, school budget and timeline. For example, a residency might be expanded to include: -a student culminating event -some teacher professional development -workshops in other classrooms -an all-school assembly Schools are encouraged to select the program components that best meet their educational goals. Young Audiences staff is available to help design an appropriate program.

San Jose Jazz High School All Stars

High School All Stars is a regional, audition-based music education program for students who are interested in the study and performance of jazz. The program includes a large ensemble and a combo. Itâ€™s designed to help students achieve a mastery of improvisation techniques while advancing their knowledge of music theory, arranging, composition, performance, and jazz history. Participation includes weekly rehearsals at San JosÃ© State University and performances in professional venues. The program is under the direction of Dr. Aaron Lington, professor of music and coordinator of the Jazz Studies Program at San JosÃ© State University and a 2014 GrammyÂ® winner for his performance and composition work with Pacific Mambo Orchestra. Dr. Aaron Lington, Director Aaron Lington is a San JosÃ© State University music professor and Coordinator of its Jazz Studies Program. He is an accomplished music educator, arranger/composer, and saxophonist. California Music Educators Association (CMEA) named him Jazz Educator of the Year; DownBeat Magazine has twice recognized him as a â€œRising Starâ€ in the Baritone Saxophone category. Aaron has adjudicated over 20 jazz festivals in the Western United States, including Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival and Folsom Jazz Festival. He frequently performs with his own Quintet, and has performed with the San JosÃ© Symphony, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra and many others. Dr. Lington earned his B.A. in Music from the University of Houston Moores School of Music, his Masters in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas, and his Doctorate in Saxophone Performance from the University of North Texas. Unlock your potential in our two-week learning lab led by some of the regionâ€™s best teaching artists. Designed for middle and high school students with backgrounds ranging from intermediate, our camp offers all-day immersion in every aspect of jazzâ€”from theory to performance. Each student participates in both a small ensemble and a big band, and one advanced ensemble will be chosen to play on the Main Stage of the 2015 San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, August 7-9. Youâ€™ll gain extraordinary experience in performance, music theory, improvisation, composition, ear training, performance and more.Â Questions? In addition, Wally is an editor and columnist for DRUM! Magazine, a position he has held for 20 years. As an educator and clinician, Wally has actively shared his knowledge at schools, camps, clinics, and private lessons. As a professional drummer, Wally performs and teaches in many genres, including Latin, funk, rock, and blues, but his emphasis has always been jazz and fusion. Wally has performed with many recording artists, including Phil Woods, Ernie Watts, Bill Henderson, Med Flory, Dave Pell, and Mary Wilson. He has performed widely, including gigs at San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, Monterey Jazz Festival, Yoshiâ€™s Jazz Club, Portland Jazz Festival, San Franciscoâ€™s Jazz in the City series, and much more. He has released eight CDs of original compositions and performed on countless CDs with other artists. The California Arts Council awarded Mr. Schnalle an Artist in Residence Grant and Santa Clara University School of Music and Dance awarded him a Compositional Commission. San Jose Taiko School Outreach Assemblies

SJT conducts assemblies for all grade levels to educate children and teachers about the history of taiko and its links to Japan and to the local Japanese American communities. The 45 minute school program presents SJT’s basic philosophical principles and engages the students to actively participate in its high-action demonstration. Teaching Taiko SJT dedicates its calendar to play to schools in the Bay Area and school residency programs throughout the U.S., in total reaching over 20,000 kids across the nation. The company is deeply committed to share the art of taiko to children and to communicate the importance of the arts in our lives. Our school outreach program seeks to celebrate America’s cultural diversity by sharing the art of taiko through performance and educational programs. The Elementary School Program features three performers, explanations of the history and philosophy of the artform as well as student participation on the drums! The Middle/High School Program is geared toward older audiences with an emphasis on exciting high energy performances and more in depth historical and philosophical explanations. After the program, students can visit the SJT Kidsweb page to continue learning more about taiko. NOTE FOR ASSEMBLY ORGANIZERS: Please allow a 10 (min) – 30 (max) minute break in between assemblies. Each assembly performance is 45 minutes. A travel fee will be added for those schools beyond the Santa Clara County area. For schools outside of the Bay Area, availability and fees will depend on San Jose Taiko’s touring schedule.

Assembly Performances A professional artist or ensemble will present a 45-minute performance demonstration program in an auditorium, cafeteria or library before a maximum of 300 students. Performance demonstration artists on the Young Audiences roster represent a variety of artistic disciplines and a wide diversity of cultures. All programs are interactive and include a strong educational component. Curriculum guides provided to the school prior to the performance are designed to assist teachers in using the arts experience to enhance student learning.

The Cantor Arts Center plays a strong role in art education for students of all ages by offeringÂ docent-guided tours free to schools and not-for-profit groups.Â Schools from all over the Bay Area enhance their curriculum by attending tours of the Center’s diverse collections. For information on how to register, visit museum.stanford.edu/tours Schools can choose from the following tours: Introduction to the Cantor Arts Center This introductory tour features objects from a variety of cultures and historic periods. These tours are personalized for the group. Tours of Changing Exhibitions Contemporary Art This tour focuses on the contemporary art collection in the Friedenrich Family Gallery, which features works from the 1950s to the present and reflects the innovations that make this art so dynamic and exciting. Outdoor Sculpture Walk This tour explores the Stanford campus and its extensive outdoor collection of 20th-century sculpture in the quad and south campus area. Outdoor Sculpture Around the Museum This tour begins in front of the Cantor Arts Center with marble statues, dating from 1891, that flank the main entrance. The tour continues with the work of Auguste Rodin, Beverly Pepper, Mark di Suvero, and Andy Goldsworthy. Rodin Sculpture Garden and Galleries The B. Gerald Cantor Rodin Sculpture Garden features 20 bronzes by Auguste Rodin, including The Gates of Hell, and is open to the public. The Center also devotes three indoor galleries to the work of Rodin. Memorial Church Located in the Main Quad, a few minutes’ walk from the Center, the Stanford Memorial Church is the physical heart of the campus, replete with stained glass windows, mosaics, and stone carvings. Papua New Guinea Sculpture Garden Created on-site at Stanford by artists from Papua New Guinea, the garden contains wood and stone carvings of people, animals, and magical beings that illustrate clan stories and creation myths. It is located at Santa Teresa Street (off Campus Drive West) and Lomita Drive, near Roble Hall

School Play in a Box

PYT is pleased to offer on-site, after school drama classes for both public and private schools, called School Play in a Box (SPIB). With our SPIB program, students learn basic acting skills, character development, team-building, story telling, creativity, leadership skills, and more! It’s also a great way for students to make new friends, and build confidence. Our instructors are experienced theater professionals, and will meet with your students (up to 20 per class) once a week for an hour and a half at a time. During our meetings, we play theater games, learn basic acting skills, and rehearse a script for a final performance. The class culminates after 10 weeks with a play that will be presented to family and friends. PYT provides the script, instructor, props, sound cues, backdrops, simple costume suggestions, registration, flyer and curriculum. The school provides a large space for rehearsals and performances, help publicizing the class/disseminating class info to parents and students, and a point person to liaise between the school and PYT. Parents should be available by email for updates and will be asked to provide a simple costume for their child (instructions provided). Shakespeare Camp for Kids & Teens

Our Shakespeare Camp is designed to shine a spotlight on budding young talent, both on stage and behind the scenes. Students dive headfirst into acting, improvisation, technical support, and stage management. Our instructors provide structured experiences that focus on building creativity, teamwork, self-reliance, mutual respect, and self-esteem. Shakespeare Camp includes instruction in unarmed stage combat, acting, and in-depth study in scene work in one of Shakespeareâ€™s plays. Students who prefer to take a supporting role will receive training in various areas behind-the-scenes, including the design and creation of costumes, props, set pieces, and more. This camp will conclude with a performance of an abridged version of Shakespeareâ€™s magical exploration of humanity, The Tempest, for friends and family on the final day of class. Students of all experience levels are welcome. We hope your child can make a scene with Silicon ValleyÂ Shakespeare this summer!

Sharing Africa

You taught, you entertained,Â and you involved our students.â€ – AG, Special Day Class Teacher, San Mateo, California “You covered terminology we use in the classroom study of Ghana, Mali, Songhai, – you also got our students to participate … history came alive!” – SN, Teacher, Mountain View, California Sharing Africa is a fun, colorful, high energy and interactive presentation of Africa, its people and their way of life. The program features Oriki’s seasoned dancers, drummers and storytellers and takes students and teachers on a journey across the African continent invoking familiar stories and vocabulary. Sharing Africa can be presented as a one-time assembly presentation or over a period of time as a sequential music and dance appreciation program for pre-K through 12 grade. At the end of the sequential program, the class puts on a colorful showcase in African costumes. Through Sharing Africa, we expose students to world cultures different from their own in a fun and interactive way, therefore, sowing the seeds for a future generation of citizens that can appreciate and celebrate the richness of our diversity. Some teachers use Orikiâ€™s Sharing Africa program as an introduction to their curriculum on Africa particularly in middle schools. Another strength of our Sharing Africa program is our ability to adapt it to non-traditional school settings, like youth centers, group homes, juvenile halls, community agencies, churches, etc.

Children move between the activity stations which may consist of grinding & shelling corn, hay bale hoisting, tending the vegetable garden, rope-making, games on the lawn, and visiting the farm animals. A list of the dayâ€™s activities will be posted on arrival.
