1 day—1,440 minutes—86,400 seconds—total play creation CALLING ALL TEAMS! Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Gather 5 to 8 people from your school, friends, or drama club and report to the TheatreWorks rehearsal hall on a Friday evening for an overnight play creation lockdown! Doors open 24 hours later to an enthusiastic audience of friends and family and a distinguished panel of judges who will provide feedback on each team’s work. This is a creative pressure cooker where a sleepless night can give way to an exciting new play. You’ll have one day, one theme, one bag of supplies, and one chance at glory. There is only so much time to create your masterpiece! Tuition covers cost for teams of 5 to 8 people. Includes meals and snacks for the duration of the event.

Akoma Arts African (Interactive) Drum and Dance and the H.E.A.R. Program

West African (Interactive) Drumming and Dance Performance We perform over 35 culturally based school assemblies and cultural events per year, with the intent of connecting and bringing together communities by introducing Drum, Dance and Songs of the African Diaspora. Our primary audience being our local K-12th Grade student community and we also provide Professional Development to Teachers and educators interested in learning or upgrading their skills or as a team building event. With drumming and dance as the centerpiece, we involve our audiences with hands-on and feet-on opportunities to experience how their own heartbeat is a drumbeat and the basis for all rhythm. We can provide up to 20 drums and 2-3 trained dancers, which can be scaled down to meet fit the event. We teach hand drumming technique and dance movements as well vocalizing in native African dialect and through our residency program we can culminate with a student showcase. Our performance program also serves as cultural edutainment, with performances of both West African Songs (in dialect) and African American Spirituals and Folksongs performed in five segments, which takes the audience on a journey from the African Village, the Middle Passage, Enslavement era, Emancipation era, and finally to the re-connection to Africa. We also provide classes once a week to those students and adults interested in continuing their drum and dance practice through our H.E.A.R. programs (Healthy Energizing Attitude and Rhythm) and Adult Drumming and Afro-Fitness Classes.

Art in Action: Advanced 6-8 grades

Art in Action is a planned, online curriculum just like math or language arts. The curriculum is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards. There are 12 different lessons for each grade level and include curriculum integration with other core subjects. The program teaches art history, art vocabulary and a variety of hands-on projects. The program gives students a solid foundation in visual arts before entering high school. The Advanced Program for grades 6-8 teaches principles of scale, symmetry, proportion, format and 2-point perspective. Program 6: Ancient Art Â focuses on art from ancient cultures in various forms Program 7: Renaissance Art Â dives deeper into realism and perspective through the work of Renaissance artists Program 8: Art and the American Experience explores realistic landscapes and historical portraits to reflections of conceptual psychological ideas and social commentary.

Art in Action: Intermediate 3-5 grades

It is a planned curriculum just like science or language arts and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards. Each lesson has curriculum integration with other core subjects and includes interactive links and additional resources to build a dynamic program at a school. Intermediate students learn about perspective and viewpoint, color theory and 3-D form through art history, vocabulary and a variety of hands-on projects. The lessons are aligned with the Common Core State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards. Each of the grade levels have 12 different lessons. Program 3: Perspective in Art focuses on landscapes and how artists use aerial and vanishing point perspectives to create three-dimensional illusions Program 4: Modern Art looks at modern artists who use abstraction to emphasize the importance of feelings and ideas Program 5: American Art explores American artists throughout history and how their work portrays different aspects of national and cultural life. Students explore more complex concepts such as form, movement, rhythm, and unity.

Art in Action: Primary K-2

Art in Action is an online visual arts curriculum for schools. The program is fun, easy-to-teach and affordable. It is a planned curriculum just like science or language arts and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards. Each lesson has curriculum integration with other core subjects and includes interactive links and additional resources to build a dynamic program at a school. Primary K-2 students learn about realistic, abstract, balance, pattern and repetition through art history, vocabulary and a variety of hands-on projects. The lessons are aligned with the Common Core State Standards and National Visual Arts Standards. Each of the grade levels have 12 different lessons. Program K: Art Around The World introduces young students to art from different times and places. Program 1: Art Tells A Story encourages students to discover the story in a work of art Program 2: The Artist’s Vision explores how artists use their art to reflect themselves and their ideas about the world. Students explore basic art concepts such as color, line, shape and texture.

Caribbean Dance Class

Weekly Caribbean Dance class taught by Wilfred Mark. Warm-up, movement across the floor, and choreographed combinations of Caribbean folkloric dance with live drum accompaniment. Ongoing weekly classes begin July 11, 2014.

Hand Drumming, Song and Dance for Students

We work with children or adolescents and have devisedÂ programs thatÂ cater to clients with different ethnic backgrounds. We focus on connecting people though the mediumÂ of drumming and getting them to work harmoniously together. It’s all about integration and connection.Â We have had success in San Jose’s Grade – High SchoolsÂ and the Juvenile Corrections Facility. We break up a group of 30 for example into three groups, Drumming, Dancing or movement and singing. We supply up to 10 drums, and the program includes drum rhythms broken into several patterns and having those patterns assigned to the different groups of students participating, we then include singing in Native African dialects and the related dance. We given cultural meaning andÂ background on of drum rhythm, when and why it’s being played, the meaning of the dialect and respect of different cultures.

The Santa Clara County Office of Education hosts professional development in the following ways: a. The Marion Cilker Conference for Arts Education held annually in the Fall (November 15/16, 2013) for preservice and inservice teachers. The day-long conferences are planned and implemented through an amazing partnership with San Jose State University’s Lurie College of Education. Check our website for registration information under “educators.” b. The Arts In Your Classroom Conference is held annually in the Spring (tentatively March 31, 2014) for preservice teachers, inservice teachers, teaching artists, parents, and the community. This event is held with San Jose State and the Montalvo Arts Center. Check our website for more information under “educators.” c. Professional development on our Artrageous program (visual arts aligned to Common Core Standards) is held for any interested school district, parent group in a district, and after school provider. The program lessons can be viewed on our website under “Artrageous”Â and include lesson plans and “how to”Â videos. d. Specialized professional development can be created for schools, districts, arts organizations, after school providers, and more. If you have a need, we can generally meet it. This includes training in the visual arts, theatre, dance, music, arts integration, the Common Core State Standards, literacy and the arts, the arts and their benefits for English Learners, the arts and technology, and more. Let us know and we can customize a training for a low/no cost. e. We host the annual Young Artist Showcase for preK-12th grade public school students in Santa Clara County. Entries of visual art pieces are accepted from February – April each school year and is a competitive process with community judging from experts in both education and the arts. The artwork selected becomes part of the Young Artist Showcase’s permanent collection housed at the Santa Clara County Office, the nation’s largest adjudicated public school art collection. Teaching Artists Program

Since 2007, Montalvo’s prestigious Teaching Artists Program has been collaborating with local elementary and secondary school teachers to shape students into innovative, flexible,and creative thinkers. WHAT EXACTLY IS A TEACHING ARTIST? Teaching Artists are professional artists who have extensive experience as educators in various learning environments. Rather than a one-time visitor to a class or school, Teaching Artists work closely with students and teachers for a multi-week period to design and implement lesson plans focusing on multidisciplinary creativity and transparent curiously, all based in the arts. More than simply the practice of art for art’s sake, Montalvo Teaching Artists are committed to the belief that the arts are ideally suited to teach just about any subject–and they have the track record of boosting student test scores and subject mastery to prove it. Providing students with an integrated context for the concepts they are mastering, teaching artists give kids the keys to academic success.

The Secret Life of Squares

From the stately “Shadowed Flight” to a vaudevillian handshake routine to Chinese legends of flight told with giant Tangrams, the Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble addresses symmetry, number sense, the history of ideas and, ultimately, how we think. Their show The Secret Life Of Squares, with company dancer Saki, has inspired reviewer’s comments like these: “This duo showed the playful and engaging side of science… If I had known science and math could be so much fun, I would have paid more attention at school.”
