With a reputation for artistic excellence, innovation, diversity, and integrity, TheatreWorks is Silicon Valley’s leading professional nonprofit theatre company. TheatreWorks presents a year-round season of musicals, comedies, and dramas in the state-of-the-art Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts and at the graceful California Mission-style Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto.

Founded by Artistic Director Robert Kelley in 1970, TheatreWorks is dedicated to the discovery and development of new voices in the American theatre. It regularly stages new works — many developed in the company’s own New Works Initiative program. It frequently produces regional and West Coast premieres of important modern and contemporary works from Broadway, off-Broadway, and beyond. It also stages distinctive re-imaginings of the classics.

The Young Storytellers Lab

Program description

For grades 6-9, the Young Storyteller’s Lab is a two week residency that focuses on the art of storytelling, from the writing of it to the final staging. Students get a unique opportunity to find their voice and share it with the world.

The Young Storytellers Lab is a literary and solo performance-based, in-school residency for junior high and incoming high school students. This literary and performance arts based program will bring in a professional playwright and performer to teach the craft of oral storytelling. Students will learn to craft their own monologues, both on the page and on the stage, leading up to final performance where the students perform their original stories for their community.

The Young Storytellers Lab can be tailored to fit language arts, drama, and history curriculum. Residencies can happen in the course of two weeks, or be spread out over several weeks to accommodate classroom scheduling.
