1 day—1,440 minutes—86,400 seconds—total play creation CALLING ALL TEAMS! Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Gather 5 to 8 people from your school, friends, or drama club and report to the TheatreWorks rehearsal hall on a Friday evening for an overnight play creation lockdown! Doors open 24 hours later to an enthusiastic audience of friends and family and a distinguished panel of judges who will provide feedback on each team’s work. This is a creative pressure cooker where a sleepless night can give way to an exciting new play. You’ll have one day, one theme, one bag of supplies, and one chance at glory. There is only so much time to create your masterpiece! Tuition covers cost for teams of 5 to 8 people. Includes meals and snacks for the duration of the event.

A Childâ€™s Life in the 1890s

Field Trip

Students will learn about life in a farming community and compare that with urban and suburban life today. They will search for the historical matches to modern objects of daily life. Buildings may include the Umbarger House, Schoolhouse, Fruit Barn, Stables, and Chinese American Historical Museum.

Akoma Arts African (Interactive) Drum and Dance and the H.E.A.R. Program

West African (Interactive) Drumming and Dance Performance We perform over 35 culturally based school assemblies and cultural events per year, with the intent of connecting and bringing together communities by introducing Drum, Dance and Songs of the African Diaspora. Our primary audience being our local K-12th Grade student community and we also provide Professional Development to Teachers and educators interested in learning or upgrading their skills or as a team building event. With drumming and dance as the centerpiece, we involve our audiences with hands-on and feet-on opportunities to experience how their own heartbeat is a drumbeat and the basis for all rhythm. We can provide up to 20 drums and 2-3 trained dancers, which can be scaled down to meet fit the event. We teach hand drumming technique and dance movements as well vocalizing in native African dialect and through our residency program we can culminate with a student showcase. Our performance program also serves as cultural edutainment, with performances of both West African Songs (in dialect) and African American Spirituals and Folksongs performed in five segments, which takes the audience on a journey from the African Village, the Middle Passage, Enslavement era, Emancipation era, and finally to the re-connection to Africa. We also provide classes once a week to those students and adults interested in continuing their drum and dance practice through our H.E.A.R. programs (Healthy Energizing Attitude and Rhythm) and Adult Drumming and Afro-Fitness Classes.

Aladdin

Performance

From The 1,001 Arabian Nights comes the popular tale of young Aladdin, an impoverished ne’er-do-well, who discovers a magical lamp, befriends the powerful genie within, and falls in love with a princess. But when an evil sorcerer threatens his newfound happiness, can our young hero conquer all? Dramatically staged and showcasing intricate costumes and traditional music, the Fratello Marionettes present the story of Aladdin and his magical lamp as never before! Students are bused to arts venues throughout Silicon Valley to experience age appropriate programs with professional artists in performance. Teacher materials are supplied online for each event. Bruce Munro Exhibit Student Extensions

Bruce Munro at Montalvo: Stories in Light student extensions will be offered throughout the span of this astonishing exhibition. Based on the standard model of our student ﬁeld trips, these school visits will be an opportunity for students to more deeply engage with the exhibition through a guided tour, then by creating their own artwork in response to the installation. This will shine a light on various elements embedded in Munro’s work. We will offer three, discipline-speciﬁc tracks: Installation Art, Technology, and Literature. Installation Art: (Adaptable to grades 2-12) After touring the property and experiencing the Bruce Munro at Montalvo exhibition, students will be prompted to explore the conceptuality of installation art and sketch ideas for a work within their community. Referencing Munro’s Bacchus’ Spring, Gathering of the Clans, and Light Shower, students will experiment with common objects as modular units, and create Munro-inspired collaborations. Technology: (Adaptable to grades 2-8) In this STEAM based workshop, students will work within the intersection of art and science. After walking our grounds and experiencing the Bruce Munro at Montalvo exhibition, students will be prompted to explore the use of technology within artistic practices. Taking inspiration from Munro’s Silver Sea, which represents clusters of lilies, students will work through the basics of circuitry to produce their own illuminated stems. Literature: (Adaptable to grades K-12) How can we connect to a new place or environment through our favorite stories? When Bruce Munro visited Montalvo for the ﬁrst time he was instantly transported to the world of Narnia, created by author C.S. Lewis. Inspired by these stories, Munro curated pieces to tell the stories of Narnia through the mediums of light and sculpture. In response to Munro’s Dawn Treader, students will engage in a writing and illustration workshop where they will explore the generative process through which narrative gives rise to visuals and visuals inspire new narratives. CMT Student Matinees

CMT San Jose (Children’s Musical Theater) offers special weekday morning performances for students of all ages from schools and community groups throughout the Bay Area. All Student Matinees include a Q&A session with the cast, led by CMT San Jose Education Manager, Deanna Knudsen, and a chance for your students to meet the performers after the show. Join ICCâ€™s Cultural Immersion Camps which will give the campers a quick tour to India and itâ€™s vibrant culture. These camps include arts, crafts, folk dance/ bollywood dance, music, yoga, Indian history & geography. Each week of camp explores a new theme exploring a period in Indian history or a geographic area. Join us for all the weeks to make sure you travel all over India in one summer right here at ICC! Activities include yoga, Dance, Indian History skits, Indian Geography Games,Indian Crafts, Indian Cooking, Indian Music, Indian Sports and much more fun. The week ends with a Family Dhamaka where we share what we learned during the week in a special performance for family and friends. DMCStudio at MACLA

Building upon a long history of neighborhood youth arts programming, MACLA teamed up in 2011 with The Black Eyed Peas Peapod Foundation and the Adobe Foundation to start the Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Academy (PAYVA). This model enriched MACLA’s original platform by increasing its regional and national visibility as well as providing additional resources for teaching, production, and performance. This year, continuing on the success of its three years as PAYVA, MACLA is pleased to launch the brand-new DMC Studio at MACLA. DMC Studio is a free arts education program in San Jose, CA, dedicated to mentoring Silicon Valley youth (ages 13-18) in 21st century skill development through multimedia production. The highly selective, year-round program focuses on a range of disciplines, including professional video and sound production, visual and performing arts, and photography. Summer and after-school workshops range from individual to group-based projects and are taught by experienced industry professionals in a state-of-the art studio environment. In addition, the studio provides youth with a venue for the exploration of relevant social, personal and community issues. It encourages youth to engage in community dialogue, develop their artistic voices, become cultural innovators, and discover how art is used for social change. Because of its latest digital technology offerings, variety of workshops, and multidisciplinary, hands-on approach to digital literacy, DMC Studio provides youth with artistic, technical, and practical work skills and experience to prepare them for college and beyond. Finally, and also building upon a long history of community arts engagement, DMC Studio is pleased to announce that it is open to digital media producers and artists with professional recording/filming studio needs.

Farmyard Program (February â€“ November) 2nd grade through 6th grade, 1.5 hours Introduction to Ardenwood/local history with a focus on turn-of-the-last century farm life. Seasonal hands-on activities with an emphasis on where food comes from including planting, tending, harvesting or processing crops.

During the Imagination Station program, students are immersed in one of Tony Foster’s journeys as they become animals in search of food, water, and shelter within one of the depicted habitats. Each visit includes story time and a hands-on art project through which students can share their wilderness adventures. All Field Trip Adventures include a facilitated program, gallery exploration, and opportunities for students to apply their understanding through interactive activities that explore the intersections of art and nature. All Imagination Station programs have a default maximum attendance of 20 students. If you have a larger group, please feel free to contact us and we’ll be happy to design a program that fits the needs of your school.

Field Trip Adventure: Into the Wild

Tony Foster’s journeys offer a unique perspective on how to convey one’s space, place, and experience with others. During this program, students witness and discuss the beauty of each landscape while exploring the significance of Foster’s depictions of the natural world. Students will be introduced to the art of nature journaling, and will be invited to start their own journals in the galleries. All Field Trip Adventures include a facilitated program, gallery exploration, and opportunities for students to apply their understanding through interactive activities that explore the intersections of art and nature. The default tour size for our programs is 30 students, but please contact us if you have a larger group and we will work with you to create a custom program that meets the needs of your school.

Uncover the clues that Tony Foster left behind and embark on an interactive journey in Foster’s footsteps. Participants will learn how artist Tony Foster not only creates beautiful paintings but also tells the story of his journey with each work. The visit includes an art making activity through which students can share their own stories. All Field Trip Adventures include a facilitated program, gallery exploration, and opportunities for students to apply their understanding through interactive activities that explore the intersections of art and nature. The default tour size is 30 students, but please feel free to call if you have a larger group and we will work with you to create a custom tour that fits your school’s needs.

The default max class size is 20 students, but please feel free to contact us if you have a larger group and we will work on a customized plan for your group.

This visit includes an introduction to nature journaling, in which students learn how they can document and share their own perspectives through art. All Field Trip Adventures include a facilitated program, gallery exploration, and opportunities for students to apply their understanding through interactive activities that explore the intersections of art and nature. Hand Drumming, Song and Dance for Students

We work with children or adolescents and have devisedÂ programs thatÂ cater to clients with different ethnic backgrounds. We focus on connecting people though the mediumÂ of drumming and getting them to work harmoniously together. It’s all about integration and connection.Â We have had success in San Jose’s Grade – High SchoolsÂ and the Juvenile Corrections Facility. We break up a group of 30 for example into three groups, Drumming, Dancing or movement and singing. We supply up to 10 drums, and the program includes drum rhythms broken into several patterns and having those patterns assigned to the different groups of students participating, we then include singing in Native African dialects and the related dance. We given cultural meaning andÂ background on of drum rhythm, when and why it’s being played, the meaning of the dialect and respect of different cultures.

Hip-Hop Leadership Academy (HHLA)

The Hiphop leadership academy is a specially designed program that traditionally provides 8 weeks of curriculum that expands across culture, social justice, education and mental health. this program can be modified to meet the needs of any school or student population. For this program we shall offer our workshops and studio recording for a limited amount of students with workshops adapted for hybrid programming. You can also request a virtually based program due to COVID concerns and restrictions.

History, Science, and Arts Field Trips

Montalvo Arts Center is a beautiful 175-acre park that brings together nature, science, history, and the arts. It’s the perfect place to bring students for a field trip that is both educational and fun! Students will see the Villa, gardens, theaters, and trails while learning about local and California history. Teachers are welcome to bring their entire class (grades K-12) to Montalvo for a guided tour of the historic Villa and beautiful grounds. Each experience can be tailored to focus on a grade-appropriate curriculum, blending California history, the Visual and Performing Arts, the Sciences, and more. Field Trip Options: Docent- Led tour of the historic Villa Montalvo $100 per class (maximum of 25 student per class), up to 4 classes per day. Docent- Led tour of the historic Villa Montalvo, a hike through one of our trails, and an art making activity. $250 per class (maximum of 25 students per class), up to 2 classes per day. Tours run through the academic school year and can be tailored to your grade level curriculum needs. Pre- and post-visit activities may include lunch or other activities on the grounds. Imagine It, Design It...Build It!

Children’s Discovery Museum is equally committed to the sciences and arts in its daily program offerings and exhibits. We are currently offering our visual arts programs virtually due to Covid-19 and current county public health mandates. The virtual field trip portion of the proposed program will reinforce the concept(s) explored in the first portion of the art lesson. Students will reconvene at the end of their exploration of the Museum to discuss the connections they found to the facilitated art experience, their overall Museum experience, and what they are learning currently in their classroom. Let us bring creativity and curiosity to your classroom! Join us for a virtual art and science experience inspired by the exhibits at Children’s Discovery Museum. Programming can be reinforced to support what students are currently exploring in their classroom grade level units as well as to reinforce Common Core and VAPA standards. Imagine It, Design It…Build It Design and create a mini-exhibit for other children. Learn about how museum exhibits are designed, who creates them, and who uses them. Mainstage Student Matinees for the 2019-20 season will be: Strauss’s Die Fledermaus: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019 @ 11:30 am Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 @11:30 am Verdi’s Il trovatore: Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020 @11:30 am Mozart’s The Magic Flute: Wednesday, April 15, 2020 @ 11:30 am Requesting Seats – Requests for seats are currently being accepted. Attendance at student matinee performances are free to K-12 students and their teachers/chaperones that accompany them. To ensure that the maximum number of seats are available for students, please keep the number of adult chaperones to a minimum. Additional Details: Mainstage student matinees, which run approximately 3 hours, take place at the California Theatre located at 345 S. First Street in downtown San Jose. Die Fledermaus will be sung in German with English supertitles and dialogue, Hansel and Gretel will be sung in English with English supertitles; Il trovatore will be sung in Italian with English supertitles, and The Magic Flute will be sung in German with English supertitles. All productions are recommended for students 3rd grade and older.
